The Ranji Trophy is a premier domestic first-class cricket tournament that is played between multiple states, union territories and a few government teams. This tournament is named after Colonel H.H. Shri Sir Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji II, who was the first Indian cricketer to play International cricket.
The Ranji Trophy first season was in 1934-35, and the first match was played between Madras and Mysore on November 4, 1934, at the Chepauk Cricket Ground, Madras. The Winner of the first session was Mumbai (Bombay).
The format of this tournament saw many changes since the first season but in 2001 a major change was made. Teams were categorized into five different zones namely, North, West, East and South (it was added in the 1952-53 session).
Since the 2021-22 season the format is that all 38 teams are placed into two divisions i.e. the Elite Division and Plate Division. The Elite Division has 32 teams that are divided into 4 groups and the Plate Division has 1 group with 6 teams. Both divisions have separate knockout matches and none of the teams from any division amalgamate with each other.
